2 small craters are inside the crater right above the L in dollar. The 2 lines above the eye are no longer there. The feathers have been smoothed out and the raised lines at the edge of the wing feathers are gone. Type 2 & type 3 breast and wing feathers. And was used for the rest of the years with the exception of the bicentennial reverse. New die steel strength is the cause of the 3rd reverse to be created.

Type 2 high relief was a 1972 proof die used at San Fran mint that was mistakenly used at the Philly mint. Type 1 low relief was used on all 1972 p&d coins from Jan. There were 3 different reverse designs used in 1972. Unlike Philadelphia (who distributed dies to Denver) they could just make another one up so die repair was not real high on their list.The 3 types refer to the reverse master hub designs. Most peglegs of the die abraded variety originated from the Denver Mint primarily because they had to make their dies last and last.

This 1972 Type 1 is more by design that actual die abrading. Peglegs do come is all different kinds of varieties though: This sucker is more rare than a Type 2 IKE although current prices do not reflect this!

Peglegs do not have any appreciable value over their non-pegged counterparts with the exception of the 1971-S 40% Business Strike coin. When these get abraded, the R really fades! Eisenhower on the obverse, and a stylized image honoring the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon mission on the reverse. The 1976 BiCentennial coins (Type 1 and produced in 1975) are peglegs as well. The Eisenhower dollar was a one-dollar coin issued by the United States Mint from 1971 to 1978 it was the first coin of that denomination issued by the Mint since the Peace dollar series ended in 1935. Some of them do fade into the background or appear extreme due to a lack of cameo frost though. The proof IKE is a different story though as these coins are peglegs by design, similar to the 1972-S Proof and 40% Business Strike coins which are all peglegs. Extreme cases have the leg of the R actually fading into the field. After a certain amount of die abrading and repair, those serifs invariably get polished off leaving that left leg straight up and down. To repeat, the R in LIBERTY on your typical Eisenhower Dollar has serifs on the left leg of that R.
